History of Murano glass

Our clients are art collectors and have a great appreciation for beautiful art of Murano glass so we decided to implement some beautiful custom pieces in our designs.

I would like to share a with you today some of my favorite pieces that we commission from Italy as well as some snippets of History of this art .

Murano, Italy is chalk full of religious monuments, Royal history, and glass. Murano’s beautiful and unique glass is probably what the city is most known for, but the beloved glass has an intriguing history behind it.

During the renaissance era Murano was travel hub for the now affluent middle class and well to do merchants. At the time glass was considered a novel possession that was hard to use. It was compelling at the time because it harbored many different uses. Such as kitchen wear, decor, and jewelry. The glassmakers in Murano however were possibly the only ones, known, at the time who possessed the talents of manipulating the glass. Their methods included smalto (enameled glass), aventurine (glass with threads of gold), millfori (colored), and finally my personal favorite lattimo (milky). By the 14th century glassmakers were allowed to, wear swords, marry their daughters to nobility, and were exempt from venetian prosecution. Being a limited breed of craftsmen gave many benefits, but they were prevented from ever leaving Venice. Some glassmakers took the risk and traveled to England, the Netherlands, and other countries to spread the beauty of their delicate handiwork.

We are so lucky today to be able to easily attain these beauties.

I hope that you will enjoy love these as much as we do.

Cheers Tatiana
