Rice University Bungalow

Located in a charming Rice University area of Houston, this historic bungalow has evolved significantly over the years-from spacios addition and garage apartament to a second time around full kitchen renovation. Our clients, a Korean-American family, wanted to maintain the traditional character of the home and include their family heirloom pieces while blending in modern details that bring together both cultures. Our design approach reflects their requests while honoring the home’s original architecture and history. They expressed a wish to have a wallpaper in one of the rooms so we decided that the formal dining room is a perfect candidate for it. Our choice of Chinoiserie-inspired wallpaper was intentional for two reasons . This created an elegant yet playful backdrop, giving the space a layered, formal astetics while introducing a glimpse of oriental character. In the living room adjecent to a formal dinning room we have continued a similar color scheme that also was predominant in the artwork we placed above fireplace. Custom armchairs flank the fireplace, creating balanced seating arrangement and again through reinforcement of the dominant color palette they add another layer to the overall design. The office and familly room feature a more pronounced oriental design influence, with curated Korean artwork and bespoke embroidered cherry blossom drapery that nod to the client’s heritage. These personal touches bring meaning and warmth to each room, merging tradition with fresh design thinking.

This Rice University charming bungalow was such fun project-an opportunity to celebrate culture and unique heritage of our sweet clients.
