15 Interior Design Tips For Your Home

There are so many decisions to take into consideration when decorating your home that it’s easy to get overwhelmed and just walk away from it.

I have put together some of the most common issues that most homeowners struggle with.

  1. Planning

I am a strong believer in planing and allocating budget wisely . First think about the overall style and feel that you are going for. Look through magazines, Pinterest and maybe pay a visit to some furniture showrooms. Save your favorite ideas as a point of reference, and guide for your design.

  2. Decide what is staying and what is being sold or donated -make a list of existing furniture pieces, artwork, and such and then a purchase list . This helps you stay organized and within budget.

  3. Create a mood board - just as we designers do you should also create a mood board to be able to visualize your new space. Include your new color palette, artwork, lighting, rugs, 1new and old furniture and such.

  4. Write a list of tasks that you need to preform in order to procure your decorating project . This helps you stay organized and on top of things and moves project faster towards completion.

  5. Ask for advice when in doubt- If budget allows it’s nice to hire a professional designer for few hours to brainstorm your plans and ideas and to get a feedback that you can apply to your project.

  6. How will you use your space - this is an important step when deciding on a design.

Before starting your project ask your self how will this space be used, who will use it and such. This will help you decide on furniture pieces needed and placement of it .

  7. Scale - You have to keep in mind a scale of the room when decorating. Larger rooms can obviously take larger pieces of furniture, a grand scale pattern, more furniture pieces, etc.

  8. Make the most of the space -My belief is that every room in your home should be used on a daily basis. You don’t necessarily need to go with standard uses for particular space. A dining room can serve as a library and formal dining at once . Family rooms are often nowadays converted into a children’s playroom in homes with multiple living rooms. Guest bedrooms in many homes serve as office when vacant. As I mentioned earlier think how will you use this space .

  9. Be creative- After all it’s your home, make it unique to you. Think outside of the box!

  10. Establish your investment-As I mentioned before this is so important. I believe that without a budget there is no successful project. Once you know realistically how much everything will cost in order to design your new space you will be able to make better and faster decisions on purchasing.

  11. Ensure that your design aligns with the rest of your home so that there is a good flow from the entryway onwards.

  12. Establish your color scheme- Once you decide on a few colors that you like the best, take time to paint a few large samples of each to see what best works for your space and design

  13. Place them in a different areas of your room and observe…

You will notice that same color hue looks different in a different parts of room. This will help you decide on what looks best to you.

  14. Add a focal point to your room- The Human eye tends to focus on one thing. Add a nice chandelier, wallpaper, artwork, collection and such. This makes room complete.

  15. Lastly/ Don’t forget to accessorize!

Add fun pillows, throw blankets, small styling pieces, art, family mementos, family photos. These final touches are what brings one room together, giving it a layered look and personality.

Let me know if you have any questions that I haven’t covered in this issue of our blog
